Carnegie Mellon University
The committee for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging in the Language Technologies Institute was established to work with faculty, staff and students in the department and across the university to create a climate that is diverse, inclusive, and supportive of all stakeholders.

Initiatives

The various initiatives of the LTI DEIB committee are organized according to the framework of the School of Computer Science DEI strategic plan, namely: Training and Education, Access and Success, Measuring Progress, and Community. Since our committee's inception in 2020 we have: (i) implemented a mentoring program to provide support for students; (ii) included students in the LTI admissions process; (iii) requested feedback from the LTI community, and (iv) engaged in community building through events such as town halls and smaller group discussions that facilitate the exchange of personal stories from a DEIB perspective.

Resources

CMU and SCS offer resources to faculty, students and staff to support them in their quest to build a community that holds Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging as core values, and simultaneously challenges systems that have historically perpetuated injustices.

Bias Busters Training

BiasBusters@CMU was developed in concert with Google. The program was piloted in the School of Computer Science (BiasBusters@SCS, CMU) to engage over issues of bias, diversity, and inclusion. BiasBusters sessions are led by members of the CMU community who have volunteered to be trained as program facilitators.

University Campus Climate Resources

The Task Force on Campus Climate canvased the university community to create this index of resources, policies and programs.
