Daniel Fried, an assistant professor in Carnegie Mellon University's Language Technologies Institute, has received a 2023 Okawa Research Grant to continue his work of modeling human users of natural language processing systems.

Fried was one of seven professors in the U.S. to receive the prestigious grant from the Okawa Foundation for Information and Telecommunications. The foundation awarded 33 total grants to professors in the U.S., South Korea, China and Japan.

Fried's work focuses on enabling people to use language to interact with computers to carry out useful tasks and examining areas where computers can complement human abilities. He studies the context around language, known as pragmatics, that allows for effective communication. Fried also works on code generation with an aim to make programming more communicative.
